Glenn Blumberg

Glenn Martin Blumberg was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 20, 1947. His mother and father barely made it to the hospital because of a snowstorm. At the age of five the family moved from Brooklyn to North Woodmere, Long Island, New York, because his father wanted a better life for his family. Glenn graduated from Hewlett High School, a school that had some of the highest paid teachers in New York State. He attended State University of New York at Stony Brook, Long Island, New York. At Stony Brook, Glenn’s major was Bio-Premed. His intention was to become a physician. Unfortunately, he did not pass Organic Chemistry and switched majors to Economics and Secondary Education. He obtained Bachelor of Arts degrees in these fields.

Upon graduation, Glenn thought that his education would open up many opportunities. He sent out almost 200 resumes but received only a handful of responses: one from an insurance company that wanted him to sell policies to his relatives; a second from Sperry and Hutchinson (S&H Green Stamps) who wanted him to become a junior bookkeeper; and a third from Bankers Trust Company that wanted him to become a teller. Since none of these employment venues appealed to him, he took a job as a full-time substitute teacher in the Hewlett-Woodmere School District for a year. This gave him a tremendous insight into the shortcomings of the educational system then and now. After raising three children of his own and also firsthand knowledge of his own health issues that hindered his educational goals, he decided to write this book.
